Basic Biographical Details

Name: Forrester & Brown
Designation: Architectural practice
Started: June 1903
Ended: c. 1914
Bio Notes: The practice of Forrester & Brown - Architects, Surveyors and Valuators of Edinburgh - was run by the sole partner John Brown. Brown was born on 18 May 1878, and served his apprenticeship with Edinburgh surveyors Lorimer & Fairbairn from 1893, leaving them in March 1898 to join the office of J M Forrester as a surveyor the following month. Whilst there he assisted Forrester in all aspects of the business, increasing his architectural knowledge to the extent that Forrester took him into partnership in 1901, along with another draughtsman, Mr Graham, who had been with Forrester for a number of years. Forrester died a few months later and the business was continued by Brown and Graham as Forrester Graham & Brown. In June 1903 the partnership was dissolved, Brown practising independently thereafter under the name of Forrester & Brown, Architects Surveyors & Valuators. He was elected LRIBA on 20 March 1911, his proposers being Thomas Forbes Maclennan and James Anderson Williamson. At that time he was Valuator to the Accountant of the Court Department of H M Register House.

The practice was closed during the First World War but reopened by Brown in the 1920s at 19 Montpelier Park. It moved to 18 Hartington Place in about 1927 where it remained until about 1940.
