Basic Biographical Details

Name: Frederick Robert Wylie
Designation: Architect
Born: 1904
Died: 13 January 1982
Bio Notes: Frederick Robert Wylie was born in Partick in 1904 (Reg Dist 646/3, entry 477), the son of William Wylie, company director and Isabella Pringle Forsyth, and the nephew of Edward Grigg Wylie of Glasgow. He served his articles with Keppie & Henderson from September 1921 until November 1926. During the same period he attended the evening session of preliminary classes (1921-23) and from 1922 to 1927 he was enrolled on the diploma course at the School of Architecture, Glasgow College of Art, two sessions per week being evening classes and three being day classes. In 1923 he received an RIAS maintenance scholarship. He was awarded his diploma in June 1927, having been exempted from a number of his exams due to completing the diploma course. He was awarded both a Rowand Anderson Studentship and a Leslie Hamilton Studentship that year. He used the Rowand Anderson award to spend two months of travel and study in Scotland; in 1922 he had spent a month travelling in France and Italy. He was elected ARIBA on 5 December 1927, his proposers being John Keppie, George Paterson and William B Whitie. Keppie stated that Wylie was an ‘excellent apprentice’, ‘talented and diligent’.

Wylie became a partner with his uncle and Alexander Wright in 1928 as Wylie, Wright & Wylie. The partnership of Wylie, Wright & Wylie was dissolved in 1935 and a year later George Ferguson Shanks was taken into partnership, the practice name then becoming Wylie Shanks & Wylie.

During the Second World War Wylie served with the Royal Engineers in India and his Nomination Paper states that he was responsible for the design amd construction of the Weavell Canteen in Delhi during his spell there.

Wylie was elected FRIBA on 11 March 1947, his proposers being Andrew Graham Henderson, John Watson and George Arthur Boswell.

In 1946 Walter Underwood was taken into partnership. The firm name was not changed to Wylie, Shanks & Underwood until some time after Underwood joined, at some point after October 1956 and before April 1957.

Frederick Robert Wylie retired in 1969 and died at Glen Fruin, Dunbartonshire on 13 January 1982.
