Basic Biographical Details

Name: Frederick Vincent Burke
Designation:
Born: 1873
Died: 30 August 1926
Bio Notes: Frederick Vincent Burke was born in Hutchesontown in 1873, the son of Michael Burke, Inspector of Postmen, and his wife Mary Steel. The family was Roman Catholic. He studied at Glasgow School of Art between 1898 and 1893 and was probably articled to William Tennant. On 6 April 1894 he married Elizabeth Connelly, a Catholic schoolteacher, at St Mungo's Chapel, Glasgow, and in or about 1901 Tennant took him into partnership. This lasted only until 1905: although very able, Burke was 'definitely not a teetotaller'. He was thereafter briefly in independent practice at 141 Bath Street. About 1912-14 Burke was in partnership with George Gunn.

After the First World War Burke carried out a considerable amount of work on St Mungo's RC Church in Parson Street, including a new pulpit, in 1920-24, but alcohol-related problems resulted in his being committed to Dykebar Asylum, Paisley where he died on 30 August 1926.
