Basic Biographical Details

Name: A H Tiltman & E E Deane
Designation:
Born: 1880
Died: 1886(?)
Bio Notes: Alfred Hessell Tiltman was born in 1854 and articled to Jeffery and Skiller of Hastings in 1872. In 1875 he moved to London as an improved with William Milford Teulon, and then to Henry Shaw and to Benjamin Tabberer as assistant, enabling him to study at the RA Schools from 1876. In that year he moved to the office of Rowland Plumbe for approximately two years, followed by six months' travel in France and a further six in the office of Edward William Godwin. He commenced independent practice at 22 Great James Street, Bedford Row in 1878 and was admitted ARIBA on 27 January 1879, his proposers being Teulon, Plumbe and the hospital architect Henry Saxon Snell. In 1880 he went into partnership with an older architect who had commenced practice in 1878, Edward Eldon Deane (born c. 1852), who had been articled to Sheard and Hanstock of Batley in 1868 and had been an assistant to Edward Middleton Barry and George Edmund Street. Deane was admitted ARIBA on 9 January 1882, his proposers being Lewis Henry Isaacs and Henry Louis Florence. The practice seems to have been in some difficulty and did not last; Tiltman took a job as lecturer in Architecture at the School of Estate Management in 1882 and, probably after the break-up of the partnership, Deane allowed his associateship to lapse. Although Tiltman was admitted FRIBA on 19 November 1888, his proposers being Plumbe, James Brooks and Edward Cookworthy Robins, the practice had an unsettled history, moving four times before Tiltman died on 7 July 1910. It was largely dependent for business on competitions mainly for hospitals and public baths (Harper records it as being successful in eight before 1900), and seems to have been famed as a demanding office in which to work.
