He was articled to Andrew Scobie of Dunfermline for four years from c.1890 and remained with him as an assistant for a further four before taking up a clerk of works post with John Murray Robertson. As Robertson died in 1901 he presumably remained with his successor James Findlay until commencing independent practice in Kinross in 1904. His address there was 106 High Street in 1912-14.
