Bio Notes: James Lawson Stewart was articled to David Smart of Perth, probably his first apprentice as he was in practice at 1 Wellington Street, London Bridge as early as 1868. Stewart appears to have returned to Carluke to practise. In 1869 he is described as 'surveyor and architect, Carluke' at which time he was a trustee of a bankrupt coalowner.

He died in Carluke on 2 June 1879.
