The London Midland and Scottish Railway Company included the former Caledonian Railway and the Glasgow & South Western Railway, among others.
An architectural 'development group' was set up in the early 1940s by the then deputy architect to the LMS Railway's engineering and planning division, Leslie Martin (under C H Hamlyn).
