The firm operated for two years, after which Skae returned to his native land. MacDougall remained in Toronto, first practising on his own and then in 1873 forming a partnership with Frank Darling. This lasted for two years, after which MacDougall himself returned to Scotland. On his return to Scotland he lived at Millburn Tower, Corstorphine, Edinburgh.
