Basic Biographical Details

Name: George Annand
Designation:
Born: 12 November 1914
Died: 5 March 1964
Bio Notes: George Annand was born on 12 November 1914, the son of William Annand, bank caretaker, and his wife, Margaret Ann Logan. He served an architectural apprenticeship with Hutton & Taylor from 1930 to 1933 while studying at Glasgow School of Art, where he continued his studies for two years full-time after completing his apprenticeship. From 1935 to 1936 he worked in the Glasgow Corporation Office of Public Works. He spent two months touring Italy in 1937, and from m1938 to 1939 he worked as assistant to Sam Bunton. He passed the final exam in Edinburgh in 1940 and was admitted ARIBA on 12 November that year, his proposers being David Bateman Hutton, John Stewart and William John Blain. By that time he was again working for Glasgow Corporation. At some point during the 1930s he is believed to have assisted in the office of Burnet Son & Dick.

Annand was recruited by James Grant Shearer as an assistant in 1949, and was taken into partnership in 1952. James Armstrong joined the practice as an apprentice in 1944, followed by Shearer's son James David Shearer and Edward D Armitage in 1946, Marcus Johnston joining only slightly later.

Shearer continued to be the lead designer in the practice right up to the time of his death at Morton Lodge on 20 December 1962. Annand died less than two years later on 5 March 1964. He was found dead in bed having died in his sleep in the night. He was survived by his wife Agnes Loughran.
