Bio Notes: David Stirling was born in 1822 in Galashiels, the son of James Stirling, stonemason. David served his articles in his home town. He emigrated to Canada about 1847, settling in St John's Newfoundland and being employed on rebuilding the Bank of British North America on Duckworth Street. Further work ifor the bank followed.

In 1852 Stirling married Jane Fullerton of Pictou County, Nova Scotia and in 1855 he secured the commission for designing the Pictou County Courthouse. He subsequently practised in other parts of the Atlantic provinces and Ontario until the late 1880s, his busiest period being the 1860s in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He formed a partnership with William Hay in 1862 but this must have been dissolved in 1864 as Hay returned to Scotland that year. After the death of his first wife, Stirling married a second time in 1869 to Clara Richmond Lea,.

In the 1870s Stirling fomed another partnership, this time with a Prince Edward Islander William Critchlow Harris. Together they undertook a number of commissions on Prince Edward Island including the large Falconwood Asylum.

Stirling was one of only six architects who were elected to membership of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts after its inauguration in 1880, W C Harris joining a year later.

David Stirling died on 13 April 1887 and was buried in Charlottetown's Peoples Cemetery.
