He was articled to Frank Matcham from 1879 to 1883, and subsequently assisted in the office of Walter Emden until 1886 when he appears to have commenced practice on his own account, becoming a distinguished theatre specialist.
Around 1889 he took his assistant Bertie Crewe into partnership. Crewe had been educated at Merchant Taylor's School in London, articled to Clement Dowling, attended Atelier Lacoux, Paris, and subsequently assisted in the office of Thomas Walter Laurence Emden in London for two years before joining Sprague as assistant.
