Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Randall Quinton | Designation: | | Born: | c. 1846 | Died: | 31 August 1901 | Bio Notes: | William Randall Quinton was born in Stirlingshire in 1845 or 1846 the son of James Quinton, boot closer, and his wife Margaret Strang. There is conflicting information about his birth date. Census records vary between the mid-1840s and mid-1850s, although his age at death, 55, would make his birth date 1845 or 1846.
He is described as an architect's apprentice in 1861 and was living in the parental home in Hamilton at that date. In Slater's 1867 'Directory for Motherwell' he is described as 'architect and surveyor'. By 1871 he had moved to Glasgow where he was a draughtsman and teacher of drawing. In 1877 he was declared bankrupt. He is later described as an 'architectural draughtsman'. He also worked in Rothesay. In 1881 he was living with his family in Portobello but in the 1890s moved to Paisley. In 1891 he was a boarder living in Wallace Street, Paisley and is described as an architectural draughtsman.
He died aged 55 at the Royal Alexandra Infirmary in Paisley on 31 August 1901. He was married twice, first to Agnes Ferguson who divorced him in 1894 because he repeatedly assaulted her, and had been having an affair with Jessie McKelvie with whom he had been lodging in Paisley. With his first wife he had five children of whom two survived. He subsequently married Jessie McKelvie.
