Basic Biographical Details

Name: James Sampson (or Samson)
Designation:
Born: 1796(?)
Died: 1869(?)
Bio Notes: James Sampson (sometimes spelt Samson) was born in about 1796 in Angus. In the 1841 census he is recorded as living in ' Black Croft, Samson's Land' which indicates the family had a long connection to Dundee. He practised in Dundee from at least 1837. It may be that he worked in David Neave's office, as he does not appear in the 1840 directory and was responsible for the sale of his house in Tay Street in February 1842. He was, however, one of the signatories to the protest to the Town Council against William Scott's appointment as Town's Architect with freedom to undertake private commissions.

After 1842 he practised from the somewhat downmarket address of Blackscroft, at least until 1869. In 1866 Sampson was called as a witness in the case brought to court by the Caledonian Railway Company against Brown's Trustees regarding the value of land.

He does not appear in the Directories after 1871-72. His will was registered on 9 August 1873. His widow, Isabella Archer died on 26 September 1877.
