While there he attended the Aberdeen School of Design and briefly taught there. Around 1899 he moved to London and studied at the RA Schools under Phené Spiers, enabling him to pass the qualifying exam in 1902. He was admitted ARIBA on 1 December of that year, his proposers being George Lethbridge (with whom he was then working at 7 Drapers Gardens), Herbert Hardy Wigglesworth (whether through his Aberdeen connections or employment is not clear) and Samuel Flint Clarkson, the North Chelsea surveyor. He was then living at 7 Aden Grove, Green Lanes, London.
