He had two older brothers, Robert who became a mason and later surveyor of police in Edinburgh, and George who was a builder. He was the father of John Paterson (1832-77) and Robert Hamilton Paterson (18443-1911) and was factor to the Duke of Hamilton's estate. He was described as 'a modest and intelligent man' in connection with his work on the Hamilton Mausoleum. His wife was Margaret Instart.
