Basic Biographical Details

Name: William Reid
Designation:
Born: c. 1781
Died: 10 December 1849
Bio Notes: William Reid was in practice in Glasgow during the early 19th century. He was perhaps the 'Mr Reid' referred to by Joseph Bonomi in 1807 as a 'young architect in Glasgow' He was friendly with Bonomi's sons.

He won one of the prizes for the Calton Hill scheme in 1813. He designed the classical St George's Paisley in 1819 and possibly the County Buildings there. However regarding this building C Mackie states that 'the plan of the building was drawn by William Reid, Esq. The architect was Archibald Elliot, Esq., Edinburgh'. It is possible that he was acting as draftsman or clerk of works to Elliot at this point.

In the 1820s Post Office directories show that he was both architect and marble worker.

In February 1832, Reid presented a paper to the Society of Arts for Scotland entitled as follows: 'Description and Drawing (plan and section) of a plan for ventilating hospitals, workhouses, stables ands other buildings'. Two years later he presented a paper on accoustics with illustrated diagrams.

Various drawings by Reid are in the RIBA Collection.
