Basic Biographical Details

Name: A Petrie & Sons
Designation:
Born: 1905(?)
Died:
Bio Notes: Alexander Petrie was a pupil of John Thomas Rochead and commenced practice in Glasgow in 1871, specialising in small local competitions, principally for UP and Free churches and School Board work. For a time he taught classes at Glasgow School of Art. Towards the end of his career he was responsible for a very large office block in St Enoch Square built in anticipation of the electricity supply from Port Dundas. Its elevations are a curious shallow relief mixture of Cinquecento and Gothic elements: a similar building is 316-336 Argyle Street c.1899, not yet positively identified as Petrie's work. Petrie is reported to have died in 1905 (W T Johnston, no source given). The practice was continued by his sons as A Petrie & Sons.
