Bio Notes: John Galt Mitchell was born on 31 January 1870 and educated at Paisley Grammar School. He was articled to the little-known Alexander Ross of Paisley in 1886 but in 1889 transferred to the office of Thomas Graham Abercrombie to complete his apprenticeship, remaining with him as assistant for a further year until 1892. He was then an assistant with Stark & Rowntree, Glasgow, for one year, Gavin Paterson of Hamilton for four and a half years, and to Sydney Mitchell & Wilson in Edinburgh for two and a half years prior to obtaining a salaried post in Edinburgh Burgh Engineer's Department in 1900. He was admitted LRIBA on 4 July 1910, his proposers being John Watson (suggesting that he had attended classes at the School of Applied Art), George Wilson of Sydney Mitchell & Wilson, and Alexander Hay Lamont, a colleague in the Sydney Mitchell & Wilson office. At that time he was still working in the Burgh Engineer's Office and was living at 9 Comiston Gardens.
