Basic Biographical Details Name: | Mayor & Brown | Designation: | | Born: | 1902 | Died: | After 1911 | Bio Notes: | Robert Yates Mayor was born in 1865 and articled to William Landless in Glasgow from 1881 to 1887, also spending time in the office of Landless's former partner Henry Edward Clifford. At the beginning of 1888 he was recruited by Campbell Douglas & Sellars to help with the Glasgow International Exhibition project and after Sellars's death remained with Campbell Douglas & Morrison until the end of 1889. In 1890 he moved to Bristol to work first for William Larkins Bernard and then for R Milverton Drake. Over the following decade he moved several times - in 1891 to Kendal as assistant to Stephen Shaw; in 1892 to Leigh as assistant to James Caldwell Prestwick; in 1893 to Norwich as assistant first to Arthur John Lacey and then John Bond Pearce; and finally in 1899 to Charles Dorman & Son of Northampton.
He left the Dormans in 1902 to commence independent practice in partnership with John Brown. He was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911, his proposers being his former employer Charles Henry Dorman, Frederick William Dorman who was presumably a relative of Charles Henry but appears to have practised separately, and Ernest Robert Danford, another Northampton architect.
