He first appears in the Greenock Directories in 1865-66 when he had an office in the City Bank Buildings at 32 Cathcart Street. He remained there until 1873-74. In 1870-71 he appears to have been assisted by Thomas S Whyte, though no further information is yet available about this. From 1870-71 to 1873-74 his home address was Carron Cattage, Port Glasgow.
