Basic Biographical Details Name: | Alexander Finlay Mackenzie | Designation: | | Born: | 1 March 1865 | Died: | 6 September 1954 | Bio Notes: | Alexander Finlay MacKenzie was born on 1 March 1865, the son of Hector Mackenzie, joiner, and his wife, Williamina Chisholm. He was articled to William Mackintosh of Inverness on 1 September 1879. On completing his apprenticeship in 1884 he gained a temporary engagement with William Laidlaw Carruthers before moving to Dingwall to work for William Cumming Joass. In 1889 he returned to Inverness and commenced practice on his own account on 28 April of that year. In 1915 he was appointed Inverness Town Architect and Burgh Surveyor, in which capacity he was responsible for numerous individual houses and housing schemes as well as public buildings.
He was admitted LRIBA on 14 November 1930, and was elected FRIBA less than six months later, his proposers on both occasions being William John Taylor, Donald Matheson and John Wittet. In 1930 he appears as a member of the Inverness Architectural Association but by 1939 his name had disappeared.
Mackenzie died aged on 6 September 1954 when he was described as a retired architect and surveyor.
