In 1881 he was described as surveyor and architect and was living with his widowed mother and three sisters in Greenock. Ten year later he was still in the family home in Greenock although they had moved house. By 1901 he was practising as an architect in Glasgow. He seems to have moved to practise from Cawdor House, Oban in the first two decades of the twentieth century. He was a Member of the Society of Architects.
