Basic Biographical Details Name: | Alexander Taylor | Designation: | | Born: | c. 1806 | Died: | 21 June 1846 | Bio Notes: | Alexander Taylor was born about 1806. Nothing is known of his ealry years but he was an architect and civil engineer and practised for a time in Edinburgh and subsequently in Glasgow. He lived in lodgings in Glasgow with his brother who was a silk manufacturer.
He acted as agent for the letting of Drumbreck [sic] Priory, two and a half miles west of Glasgow in 1844. It is possible that he was responsible for work on this house. He also acted as agent in selling off plots for villas at Dumbreck [sic] in 1844. He seems to have acquired land and built houses speculatively at Patrick and Partickhill in Glasgow. Various advertisements appear in the Glasgow Herald for villas being let by him in this area.
He died at Partickhill in Glasgow on 21 June 1846. His 2-storey house at Partickhill along with the sites for two other houses which were partly complete were advertised for sale after his death. The agent was the architect Alexander Kirkland with whom he presumably had some connection. His will was registered on 27 April 1847. He was survived by a daughter Phoebe Alexandrine Taylor. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Partickhill, Glasgow, Scotland | Private | | 1846 | | | 1, North St James Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Private/business(?) | c. 1832 | c. 1834 | | | 13, Duncan Street, Edinburgh, Scotland | Private/business(?) | c. 1835 | | | | 21, Leopold Place, Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | 1836 | 1837 | | | 58, North Hanover Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Private | 1841 * | | | | 68, St Vincent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1844 | | | | Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1846 * | | | | Edinburgh, Scotland | Business | Before 1846 | | |
