Basic Biographical Details

Name: Frank Salmond
Designation:
Born:
Died: 1911
Bio Notes: Frank Salmond was born in Letham, Angus and trained as a civil engineer with the Caledonian Railway under its engineer-in-chief George Graham, becoming a partner with his brother James under the style of J & F Salmond in 1873, a practice of land surveyors rather than architects.

Frank's son William Salmond, born on 20 June 1878, was articled to the family firm from 1894 to 1899 and remained as assistant for a year after completing his apprenticeship, subsequently working in the Office of Public Works, Glasgow and with civil engineer P Tawse of Aberdeen before returning to the family firm in August 1903 as senior assistant. He was made a junior partner on 1 January the following year.

James Salmond retired in 1904 and died in 1905, and Frank Salmond died in 1911. William continued the practice alone thereafter under the existing name.

In person Frank Salmond was tall with, at least in later years, a long white beard. The 'Piper of Dundee' described him as 'well-furnished with a fund of native wit and sound commonsense with no fear of work, and particularly gleg in the uptak…as a raconteur has has few equals…when he musingly taps his snuff mull it may be taken for granted that the story about to be recited will be as good as the snuff with which he regales the crowds of friends'.
