Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Laird & Son | Designation: | | Born: | | Died: | | Bio Notes: | John Laird was born at 153 Greenhead, Glasgow, on 5 January 1868, the son of George Laird, then a master Joiner and his wife Margaret Donald. His early training is not yet known but may have been as a joiner rather than as an architect. He married Mary Jessie (or Jane) Lillie sometime before 1898 when their son George was born.
In 1900 or 1901 Laird's much younger brother James William Laird, born 1880, commenced independent practice at the early age of twenty. By 1904 James had taken John into partnership as J W & J Laird, probably to provide the necessary practical experience. This partnership lasted until about 1925 when John withdrew to take his son George into partnership as John Laird & Son.
John Laird died of abdominal cancer at 14 Balmoral Drive, Cambuslang, on 10 March 1937, the practice being continued by his son George. He took James Frank Williamson Hendry and James Ian Ballantyne into partnership in the 1960s. The practice still in operation in 1970. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 11, Bothwell Steet, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1940 * | | | | 87, St Vincent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business(?) | 1947 * | 1955 | | | 87, West Regent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business(?) | 1950 | | | | 10, Somerset Place, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1970 * | | | | 13, Woodlands Terrace, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1979 * | | |
