His monument in Valley Cemetery, Stirling, which is presumably correct, gives his age as fifty-five, the Building News as fifty-eight and the British Architectural Library/RIBA 'Directory of British Architects 1834-1914' as fifty. No details are as yet available on his training and he does not appear in the 'Architect's, Engineer's and Building Trades' Directory' of 1868. McLean married Grace Fulton who died on 10 April 1926 aged ninety. The McLean monument also records their children Alexander who died on 7 June 1886 aged fourteen, Grace who died on 6 February 1889 aged eighteen, James who died on 5 April 1892 aged twenty-five, and Rachel who died on 9 April 1897 aged twenty-one. Margaret Thomson McLean died on 9 February 1950 aged seventy-seven and Robina Agnes McLean died 19 December 1952 aged seventy-eight.
