He was the son of John Knowles, architect, London. He would seem to have trained as a portrait and landscape painter and in 1851 he living in 120 Crown Street, Aberdeen. Knowles married Martha Sophia Preston, the daughter of a ship-owner in Newcastle in 1852. Knowles may have practised as an architect in Newcastle in the 1850s. The partnership with Johnstone must have been very short-lived as Knowles was living in London by 1861.
Knowles died in 1872.
