Designation:
Born: c. 1829
Died: 1872
Bio Notes: Little is yet known of the background of William Alexander Knowles, who entered into partnership with John Johnstone about 1855, in Newcastle.

He was the son of John Knowles, architect, London. He would seem to have trained as a portrait and landscape painter and in 1851 he living in 120 Crown Street, Aberdeen. Knowles married Martha Sophia Preston, the daughter of a ship-owner in Newcastle in 1852. Knowles may have practised as an architect in Newcastle in the 1850s. The partnership with Johnstone must have been very short-lived as Knowles was living in London by 1861.

Knowles died in 1872.
