He was born in Edinburgh in about 1835, the son of Walter Kirkwood, machinist. In 1861 he was living with his father, also Walter, a machinist, in Edinburgh and his three sisters. By the 1870s he was practising as an architect in Lochgilphead. He was married and the couple had four sons and two daughters. The eldest son was born in England which suggests Kirkwood had spent some time working in England around 1865.
