Basic Biographical Details

Name: James Carruthers Walker
Designation:
Born: 1874
Died:
Bio Notes: James Carruthers Walker was born in 1874 and articled to Henry Higgins of Glasgow from 1891 to 1896, remaining as assistant until 1898 during which period he attended the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. He then became chief assistant to Peter Macgregor Chalmers, leaving in 1900 to join James Miller as chief assistant. He remained there until at least 1911 when he was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July, proposed by John Bennie Wilson and the Glasgow Institute of Architects. At that date his private address was at 6 Lindsay Terrace, but by 1914 he had set up practice on his own account, and was living and working from 23 University Avenue, Glasgow, an address which suggests that he had private means beyond his salary from Miller and limited independent practice.

Walker's independent practice did not long survive the First World War, if at all. Although Richard Gunn had become chief assistant in Miller's office in 1918, Walker went back to it although the year of his return has still to be established. When Gunn died in 1933 Walker succeeded him as chief assistant and remained in charge of the office until George Miller returned from Sir Herbert Baker's office in 1936. George Miller died only four years later in 1940 and in December James Miller retired, handing over the practice to John Wellwood Manson when Walker seems to have assisted for a short period until retiring himself.
