He studied at Reading School of Art and was a pupil of William Bastin of Reading. He conducted the Art Furniture Department at South Kensington under Richard Norman Shaw, and commenced independent practice in 1883, becoming Surveyor and Architect to the Freehold and Leasehold Investment Company in that year. He was later Surveyor to the Prudential Mortgage Company and to the Cavendish Investment Company. He was admitted LRIBA in 1925.
