In 1898 he entered into partnership with Arthur Albert Messer in Woking. Messer had been born in 1863 and articled to William Doubleday of Birmingham from 1881 to 1884, remaining as improver for a year before seeking wider experience first with Frederick Josias Robinson and then, in 1888, in the New York practice of Withers & Dickson.
