Basic Biographical Details

Name: Thomas Liddell
Designation:
Born: September 1800
Died: 9 March 1856
Bio Notes: The Hon Thomas Liddell was born in September 1800, the second son of Sir Thomas Henry Liddell, Ist Lord Ravensworth. In 1808 his father began rebuilding Ravensworth Castle to the designs of John Nash but the work dragged on for more than twenty years and Thomas Liddell junior superintended the later stages of the work. He designed a Gothic gatelodge which is illustrated in Loudon's 'Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture' (1846) p1152-3.

In 1823 Liddell's sister married 6th Viscount Barrington. Liddell himself married Lord Barrington's sister, Caroline Elizabeth Barrington. Liddell designed Barrington's seat Beckett Park, Berkshire in 1831. William Atkinson had already provided designs for this and it is as yet unclear whether the final design was largely Atkinson's or Liddell's.

As an amateur architect and because of his reputation as an expert in Gothic, he was one of the Commissioners appointed to consider the rebuilding of the Palace of Westminster. Further country house work followed some of which was aborted and some executed. In the 1850s he design the interior and furnishings of the great dining-room at Glamis Castle in Jacobean style. He may also have been repsonsible for alterations to Dalkeith House, sketches for which survive in the National Archives of Scotland.

He died on 9 March 1856.
