Bio Notes: James Lowson was born in 1869 and articled to Thomas Saunders Robertson of Edward & Robertson, Dundee in 1884. In 1890 he moved to Glasgow to become an assistant on the joint railway under the Caledonian and Glasgow & South Western Railway Architects Departments, and he continued this work until 1892 when he joined the Great North of Scotland Railway Company, working under John J Smith. He succeeded Smith as the company's architect in 1900 and was admitted LRIBA on 4 December 1911, his proposers being Arthur Clyne, Arthur Hay Livingstone Mackinnon, and William Edgar Gauld of Aberdeen, whom he had met when the latter was a fellow assistant in the Great North of Scotland Railway Company in the late 1890s.
