In the latter year he obtained what was probably a junior position in H M Office of Works at 3 Parliament Square, Edinburgh under William Thomas Oldrieve and attended classes at Heriot-Watt College and the School of Applied Art. He was admitted LRIBA on 24 June 1912, proposed by James Bow Dunn and the Edinburgh Architectural Association.
