Bio Notes: Owen Jones was born in London on 15 February 1809, and educated at Charterhouse. He was articled to Lewis Vuilliamy 1825-30, attended the RA Schools, and travelled on the Continent and in Egypt and Turkey. His career as an author on decorative art began in 1842 with a monograph on the Alhambra and designs for tesselated pavements. On 23 February 1843 he was admitted FRIBA, his proposers being Philip Hardwick, Charles Barry, and Thomas Leverton Donaldson. He was superintendent of works for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was awarded the Royal Gold Medal in 1857. He died in London on 19 April 1874.
