Bio Notes: James Wylie Hislop was born about 1846 in Midcalder, Midlothian the son of James Hislop, the parish schoolmaster and his wife, Barbara Wylie. He was living in Midcalder in 1881 and worked on the Hopetoun estate in the 1880s where he may have been a clerk of works. He practised in Kirkcaldy in the late 1880s and 1890s. His wife was Jane and he had two sons and one daughter. Jane Hislop died in the 1880s.

In 1892 he was taken to court for debt by the wholesale stationers Waddie & Co, Edinburgh. He was a widower by 1901 and moved to Llandaff, Glamorgan where he lodged with a carperter called Jones but moved to Willesden, London by 1904. He died in Islington in London in 1922.
