Family recollections and census records describe him as an architect although he seems to have also been a civil engineer and surveyor. In the will of his wife he is described as an architect. He worked mainly in Dundee. He appears to have been associated with the Blackadders as he shared an address with them at 29 Bank Street from 1869 to 1877 and moved with them to Reform Street in 1878. He was the father of Colonel Hunter.
