Basic Biographical Details

Name: James Ireland
Designation:
Born: 4 December 1849
Died: 29 June 1886
Bio Notes: James Ireland was born in Dundee on 4 December 1849, the son of George Ireland and his wife Janet Leslie. He lived with his father and sisters at 'Tayview' 287 Perth Road, Dundee until his father's death on 11 January 1884. Later that year on 28 October he married Ada Greenhalgh at Manchester Cathedral.

At some point probably about 1876 he went into partnership with David Maclaren after he was appointed architect to the school board in Dundee. Their school work led to their appointment as architects to University College, Dundee for which Maclaren made a study tour of university departments in England and Wales. Maclaren became ill from overwork, and Ireland carried on the practice with the firm's principal assistant, James Hendry Langlands Senior, until his death from gangrene (his death certificate gave his cause of death as 'Phthisis') on 29 June 1886 in the house of a friend at Blairgowrie. His usual residence at this date was Beechwood Cottage, Dundee.
