Basic Biographical Details

Name: David Maclaren
Designation: Architect
Born: 1848
Died: 21 December 1887
Bio Notes: David Maclaren was born in 1848 and apprenticed at an early age to his first cousin James Maclaren, probably c.1863, and remained as an assistant until the early 1870s. He then moved to Glasgow to obtain wider experience with Hugh Hough Maclure, 'where he obtained some valuable experience in the erection of new schools'. While he was in Glasgow, Dundee School Board advertised for competitive plans: those he submitted were successful and he was induced to settle in Dundee to supervise their erection, subsequently being appointed architect to the board. At that time he entered into partnership with James Ireland. Their school work resulted in their appointment as architects to University College, Dundee for which Maclaren made a study tour of university departments in England and Wales.

Maclaren's 'leisure moments were devoted to the reproduction of illuminated missals, an art in which he excelled, or to the preparation of designs for tiles… unfortunately he applied himself with so much diligence that he ultimately fell victim to overwork' and towards the close of 1885 'he was obliged to retire from active life … shortly after his illness assumed a more serious form, and was aggravated by the subsequent death of his partner' from gangrene. During his illness the practice was carried on first by Ireland and then by James Hendry Langlands, who was principal assistant to the firm and succeeded to Maclaren's appointment as architect to the school board following Maclaren's death at St Johnswood Terrace, Dundee, on 21 December 1887.
