Basic Biographical Details

Name: James Gillison (or Gilleson)
Designation:
Born: 1772
Died: 14 May 1850
Bio Notes: Little is yet known of James Gillison (or Gilleson), who was practising in Dumfriesshire in the 1840s. He was born in 1772 at Amisfield, Dumfriesshire. He practised as an architect at 147 Irish Street, Dumfries which was also his home address. The family owned another house in the same street which they rented out. Gillison was said to have designed buildings in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow and Hamilton Square, Birkenhead. Details of what buildings these were and how he obtained the commissions have yet to be established.

In 1831 when he was 59 Gillison married Margaret Duff, daughter of a Paisley gold and silver smith. She was 28 at the time of their marriage. They had two sons and three daughters. One of sons, James Alexander Gillison, moved to Liverpool and became a ships' broker. There may have been family connections in Merseyside which would explain the commissions that James senior obtained in that area. The family attended Grey Friars Presbyterian church for almost a century.

Gillison was an officer in the 42nd regiment of the Dumfries Volunteers and at the time of his retirement he was given a writing desk and bookcase by the regiment. He died on 14 May 1850. His widow died on 17 April 1878. At the time of her death she was still in Irish Street, Dumfries.
