Basic Biographical Details Name: | George Speirs Kenneth | Designation: | | Born: | 1875 | Died: | 5 September 1903 | Bio Notes: | George Speirs Kenneth was born in Partick in 1875 (Registration District 646/2, entry 193), the son of James S Kenneth, ship commission agent from Kilwinning and his wife Annie Henderson Allison. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1889 to 1895, but it is not yet known to which office he was articled. He commenced practice shortly after completing his studies and quickly built up a prosperous tenement and warehouse clientele, the latter probably as a result of his father's business connections, but he died of a fractured skull in Glasgow Royal Infirmary on 5 September 1903, as a result of an injuriy received in the St Enoch Station railway accident*. He was unmarried.
*The Glasgow St Enoch railway accident occurred on 27 July 1903 when a special train from Ardrossan full of holiday-makers returning from the Isle of Man failed to stop in time and collided heavily with the buffer stop. The train suffered severe damage, the first two coaches being completely telescoped. This was the worst accident of this kind on British main line railways, with sixteen people killed and 27 seriously injured. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 26, Granville Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Private | Before 1889 | After 1895 | | | 57, Hope Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | Before 1898 | After 1900 | | | 3, Rupert Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Private | 1903 * | | The Times gives address as 19 Rupert Street | | Bath Street, Glasgow | Business | 1903 | | |
