He was a pupil of David Rhind. At the age of eighteen he was recommended to the Trustees' Academy by Rhind. He entered the Academy on 15 October 1853 and left on 12 July 1855. In the early 1860s he was in partnership with Charles Leadbetter as Leadbetter & Smith at 38 Hanover Street, but he left in the mid-1860s to set up his own office at 13 South Frederick Street.
