Basic Biographical Details Name: | William Finlayson | Designation: | | Born: | 12 May 1865 | Died: | | Bio Notes: | William Finlayson was born on 12 May 1865. His LRIBA nomination paper lacks dates but states that he was articled to James Hutton of Dundee for four years and spent a subsequent two years with Thomas Greenshields Leadbetter. He commenced independent practice on 2 May 1910 and was admitted LRIBA on 4 July of that year, proposed by James Glen Sivewright Gibson, Arthur Needham Wilson and William Adam Forsyth, which suggests that he had London connections. In his nomination paper he describes himself as having taught building construction classes in Crieff and Muthill and also states that he has worked on "nearly all the villas & cottages that been [sic] erected in Crieff for the past 20 years"; this and the further job list he provides indicate that he had been working for George T Ewing from c.1890 until his commencement in practice. From the lack of any mention of Ewing on the paper it may be assumed that the split was not amicable; it seems likely that it was caused by Ewing taking his son Charles Turnbull Ewing into partnership at a time when Finlayson would presumably have expected appropriate recognition for his twenty years of service to the firm. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | Leny House, Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland | Private/business(?) | 1910 * | | | | 51, Commissioner Street, Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland | Private/business(?) | 1914 * | | | | Strathearn House, Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland | Business | 1925 * | | | | Strathearn Lodge, Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland | Private | 1925 * | | |
