Basic Biographical Details

Name: Robert Thomson
Designation:
Born: c. 1854
Died: c. 1914(?)
Bio Notes: Robert Thomson was born c. 1854 at Blantyre, the son of William Thomson, master joiner and Margaret Affleck. No details are known of his architectural training. He married Marion Wilson Kyle, daughter of Robert Kyle, inspector of poor, at Mansefield Cottage, Kirk Street, Strathaven on 15 January 1879. Their son Robert Kyle Thomson was born on 5 September 1880 at Hill House, Uddingston. By that year Robert Thomson had commenced independent practice at 40 St Enoch Square, Glasgow. In the late 1890s he was assisted by Andrew Wilson, of whom little is known, but who is believed to have been largely responsible for the design of several of the practice's notable office blocks.

Thomson continued to practise from various addresses in Glasgow until sometime between 1913 and 1915, Frank Worsdall giving this as the time of his death at his home, 164 Nithsdale Road, Pollokshields. Wilson, who had been made a partner by that time, inherited his practice.
