Basic Biographical Details

Name: William Low Henderson
Designation:
Born: 1828 or 1829
Died: 4 June 1899
Bio Notes: William Low Henderson was born in Aberdeen c.1828-29, the eldest son of William Henderson, architect, wood merchant and valuer. Like his father, William Low Henderson was a graduate of Marischal College. He was taken into his father's firm as articled apprentice, then assistant and finally about 1853 as partner, the practice becoming William Henderson & Son. Under this title, the firm carried out a large number of architisctural and building contracts from premises in Loch Street, Aberdeen. In later years the firm moved to Union Street, at which time the timber merchant's part of the business was discontinued and the practice more strictly confined to architectural and valuation work

From 1857 onwards the Hendersons were architects to the Union Bank in the north-east: the Union Bank had taken over the Aberdeen Bank in 1849 but that bank remained semi-autonomous within the Union Bank and retained a management in Aberdeen. The banks they built for the Union were nearly all in a very simple standard Georgian survival manner. About the time of the passing of the Education Act the firm were architects for a large number of schools in the north of Scotland, particularly in Orkney and Shetland. In the 1870's (and partly while Alexander Mavor was a partner is the business) the firm were architects for numerous buildings of a more public character, including the Morningfield Hospital, and Newhills Cottage Hospital. The firm were also architects for the Aberdeenshire County Council, and built a number of police-stations throughout the county. The Edinburgh Gazette (no.10322) of Tuesday 5th January 1892, p17, reveals that prior to 31st December 1891 there were two partners in William Henderson & Son, architects, Aberdeen: William Low Henderson and Alexander Mavor. Mavor left the partnership at that date, and began to trade on his own account from 211 Union Street, Aberdeen, while William Low Henderson continued as sole partner in William Henderson & Son, from 124 Union Street, Aberdeen.

William Low Henderson died at Bridge of Allan in June 1899 from an "affection of the heart." He had been married twice, but at the time of his death was a widower. He was survived by three sons and a daughter, including , David Smith Henderson, who resided at 12 Dee Street, Aberdeen at the time of his father's death.

A member of the Aberdeen Society of Architects, he was described as the 'sole partner' in William Henderson & Son at that date.
