Bio Notes: James M Gale was for 43 years the chief water engineer of the Corporation of Glasgow. He was born at Ayr in 1830, and received his education in Ayr Academy, and later at the University of Glasgow. In 1855 J M Gale was appointed resident engineer on the Loch Katrine water scheme for the City of Glasgow, and four years later, on the completion of the works, had become engineer-in-chief. As chief engineer, he constructed a second aqueduct from Loch Katrine, doubling the water supply of the city.

In December 1902 he resigned his post due to ill-health and died at his residence Daldrishaig, Aborfoyle on Monday 7 September 1903. He was survived by his wife, a son and daughter.
