Bio Notes: James Davie & Sons was an iron-founding and engineering firm based in Stirling. Its origins lay in the firm of Wylie & Davie, which was in existence from at least 1860 and subsequently became Wylie, Smith & Davie. James Davie served his apprenticeship in foundries in Glasgow, Hull and Manchester, and returned to Stirling in 1873 to join his father in partnership. He continued the practice after his father's death in 1885, and took his two sons into partnership in 1902. The practice developed a reputation for structural castings, particularly columns and structural steelwork, and continued at least until the 1970s.
