He attended McGill University School of Architecture from 1904 to 1909 and was an assistant in the Bank of Montreal Architectutre Department in 1905. He took holiday placements with Peden and McLaren, Percy Erskine Nobbs, Brown and Vallance. He worked as assistant to Ross and MacFarlane from 1909, the year in which he passed the qualifying exam in Toronto.
