Basic Biographical Details

Name: Alexander David Hislop
Designation:
Born: 2 March 1876
Died: 23 February 1966
Bio Notes: Alexander David Hislop was born on 2 March 1876 at Stonefield near Blantyre in Lanarkshire, the son of David Watson Hislop, a watchmaker and Margaret Marshall his wife. He was apprenticed to William James Anderson and Alexander Nisbet Paterson who had adjacent rooms at 95 Bath Street where Hislop was shared between the two. During that period he studied under Anderson at Glasgow School of Art. He won a Studio magazine prize for furniture design, 1896 and a silver medal in the national competition in 1897. He subsequently became assistant and later chief assistant to John Archibald Campbell and was taken into partnership from 1908 when Campbell's health was beginning to decline. Campbell died in 1909 and Hislop inherited the practice.

Although some sources indicate that the partnership with Charles Gibson Welsh was formed in 1924, in fact this can only have begun in the 1950s at the earliest as Welsh only qualified in 1951. Hislop continued to practise until he was well into his eighties despite increasing deafness. The practice continued as Hislop Welsh & Humphries until 1980 when it closed, the practice records being deposited with the University of Glasgow.

Hislop died of a strangulated hernia on 23 February (or March according to Iain Paterson) 1966. He was a public-spirited architect of exceptional refinement. He pioneered the use of the giant orders at the lower floors of the tall office buildings at the Phoenix in 1912-13, a theme exploited by James Millar in the 1920s.
