He was the younger brother of William Carmichael. Both brothers were architects as well as teachers of architectural and engineering drawing. Walter advertised his services as a teacher of architectural drawing at the Commercial Academy run by John Barron Bell, at 36 George Street, Edinburgh in February 1851.
